(Waukegan, IL) A proposed merger by two train conglomerates is being opposed by the Lake County Board. In a resolution filed last week, the Board said the proposal by Kansas City Southern Railway Co. to be acquired by Canadian Pacific Railway would be an overall negative for the area. Officials say that acquisition would lead to a projected 380% increase in freight traffic on rail lines owned by Metra…which could lead to increased traffic time during rush hours, degraded safety of the rail lines and other concerns for communities near train tracks. Several other areas that would be affected by the 31-billion-dollar merger have voiced similar concerns as Lake County. The proposal is under review by federal regulators.
