(Chicago, IL) A former Illinois State Senator is on his way to prison for embezzling money from the powerful Teamsters union. Thomas Cullerton was accused of accepting a 40-hour a week job as a union organizer for the Teamsters, but doing little to no work while accepting pay and benefits. In total, Cullerton embezzled nearly a quarter of a million dollars before his indictment in 2019 and his resignation from office in early 2020. The 52-year-old entered a guilty plea back in March on one count of embezzling the assets of a labor organization. He was sentenced Tuesday to one year and one day in federal prison, as well as restitution.
