Veterans dating back to the War of 1812 are laid to rest at Waukegan’s Oakwood Cemetery. Waukegan History Museum Supervisor, Ty Rohrer, will lead participants to the grave sites of numerous soldiers and will share their heroic stories. Soldiers who fought in the War of 1812, Spanish-American War, Civil War, World War I, World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War will be featured.
This free guided walking tour is appropriate for families and children and starts at the Waukegan Park District’s Lilac Cottage at 1911 N. Sheridan Road, Waukegan, IL 60087 in Bowen Park. At Lilac Cottage, participants will check-in and load onto a shuttle bus. The shuttle bus will load promptly at 10am and will return to Lilac Cottage at the conclusion of the guided walk.
The tour lasts approximately 90 minutes and includes walking on uneven ground. Please dress according to weather with comfortable walking shoes and bring something to drink; tours may be cancelled if there is rain or other inclement weather.
For questions on the guided walk, please call the Waukegan History Museum at (847)336-1859. The Waukegan History Museum is located at 1917 N. Sheridan Road in Bowen Park. The museum is free and open to the public on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am-4pm and Saturday afternoons from 1-4pm.
